Top Reasons to Visit Ecuador Self Drive
Stunning Vistas in the Andes Mountains
The Andes deliver impressive peaks, valleys and Volcanos. We will see both Chimborazo Volcano, Ecuador's highest peak, standing at 6,263 meters (20,548 feet) and Cotapxi Volcano among the highest active volcanoes in the world. Standing at about 5,897 meters (19,347 feet), this snow-capped peak is a majestic sight, located roughly 50 kilometres south of Quito (on a clear day you can see it from the city).
The Birds and Wildlife of the Amazon Rainforest
Dive deep into the heart of Ecuador's Amazon jungle in the Cuyabeno Reserve, the largest in the Ecuadorian Amazon, spanning over 590 hectares. Among the most important species living within the reserve are monkeys, tapirs, pink river dolphins, giant otters, caimans, anacondas, amphibians, and the hoatzin bird. You'll also gain insight into the local way of life.
Ingapirca Inca Ruins
Estimated to be around 500 to 600 years old, the site was initially used by the Cañari people, who built structures here as early as the 15th century. When the Inca expanded into Ecuador, they developed the site further, constructing new temples and buildings atop the existing Cañari foundations.
Colonial Charm of Quito & Other Remote Villages
Quito, Ecuador’s capital, is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a city that mixes colonial architecture with modern culture. The cobbled streets, plazas, and historic churches make it an ideal stop for those wanting to absorb the country’s fascinating past. There are also many smaller, charming towns to explore like Lago Agrio, San Antonio de Ibarra, Baños and Cuenca.
Indigenous Markets
The Otavalo Market is one of the most famous indigenous markets in South America. It takes place daily. Otavalo is known for its skilled indigenous artisans, particularly from the Kichwa Otavalo community, who create beautiful textiles, blankets, clothing, jewellery, and traditional handicrafts. You’ll find intricately woven tapestries, hand-embroidered blouses, Panama hats, and silver jewellery.
The Guamote Market is more off the beaten path, held in the small Andean town of Guamote, about three hours south of Quito. It’s held every Thursday and remains one of the few indigenous markets in Ecuador that is primarily for locals. The Kichwa Puruhá community dominates the market, and it feels like stepping back in time. Unlike Otavalo, which attracts more tourists, Guamote maintains a strong local presence and traditional character.
The Galápagos Islands (Optional Extension)
Extend your Ecuador adventure with a trip to the Galápagos, where you'll witness some of the planet’s most unique wildlife. Giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies are just a few of the creatures that make the Galápagos an iconic destination for nature lovers.

The reserve covers around 7,500 hectares and is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. It hosts numerous species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants, many of which are endemic to the region. Birdwatchers will particularly enjoy the variety of species, including toucans and colourful parrots.

The passionate growers will share their secrets and stories, making this an enriching experience. Of course, you'll have the chance to indulge in a cup of Colombia's finest coffee.
Dynamic Cities & Colourful Villages
Colombia’s cities are a cultural feast for the senses. The vibrant energy of Bogotá's La Candelaria, the city’s most beautiful neighbourhood, where colourful street art adorns every corner and the transformed Comuna 13 in Medellín, a neighbourhood that’s gone from dangerous to joyful, with colourful street art and bustling energy.
Out of the larger cities smaller charming villages await like Villa de Leyva, Monguí & Guatapé where, if you are game, you can climb the massive granite monolith of Peñol Rock, up the 740-step staircase built into the rock's crevice, which winds up to the summit. Though the climb can be challenging, it’s manageable, and the reward at the top is worth it. From the peak, you get a stunning 360-degree view of the lush, island-filled reservoir below, as well as the surrounding Andes mountains.
In summary, both Ecuador and Colombia offer travelers a chance to dive into rich histories, varied ecosystems, and exciting adventures. This journey will leave you with memories of a lifetime!
